Course Overview
Reading is a fundamental skills that all students must master. Students with reading difficulties often struggle to do well in school. This then negatively affects their social and emotional wellbeing.
Between 15-20% of children struggle with some form of either dyslexia or reading difficulty. Although not all reading difficulties are caused by dyslexia, an estimated 1 in 5 primary school children have difficulties learning to read. Research shows that 90-95% of students with dyslexia and language-related learning disabilities can overcome their difficulties and succeed in school if they receive appropriate treatment and intervention.
It is found that students with learning disabilities have fewer strategies and use them less than typically achieving students, resulting in poor academic results. Therefore, they can benefit greatly from specialised interventions that teaches them to use effective strategies.
Beyond giving an appreciation of the struggles faced by such students, this course will equip participants with effective strategies that can be used to teach students who struggle with reading, writing and spelling.
Important Notes:
(1) The strategies taught in this workshop are suitable for small group settings such as tuition group or parent-to-child coaching. Those wishing to learn skills to teach such students in a classroom environment are encouraged to register for the 'Teaching Strategies to Support Students with Dyslexia and Other Learning Disabilities in a Classroom Setting' workshiop.
(2) Based on DSM-5, ADHD and ASD are not classified as learning disabilities. As such, those who wish to learn skills to teach ASD and ADHD students are encouraged to registered for the 'Working with Children and Adolescents with Autism in Mainstream School' and 'Working with Children and Adolescents with ADHD' workshops respectively.
