The workshop will be facilitated by Ms Ruth Chew. Ruth has a Master’s degree in Psychology from the University of Glasgow and a Postgraduate Certificate in Psychology and Neuroscience from King’s College London. Ruth currently works as an educational therapist and specialist tutor, providing learning support for students with Dyslexia, ADHD, ADD and Language Processing Disorder. She has worked in the education industry for many years, and has extensive experience teaching and working with students with learning disabilities.
Ruth has painstakingly compiled the strategies that she has found most useful and effective into a framework that can be used with students of varying ages and abilities. |

Course Overview
There are many study skills workshops. But most of them do not address the research base of the skills taught. Many are, in fact, not grounded in research. Also, these workshops tend not to consider the different cognition and learning styles of students; hence, limiting their effectiveness. Finally, the effectiveness of the taught skills is simplistically tied to the experience of the trainer.
When designing this course, we are cautious to avoid these mistakes: firstly, the trainer is formally trained in psychology and, in particular, neuroscience. Secondly, we are careful to teach techniques that have proven research backing. Thirdly, the trainer has also many years of teaching experience with students of differing learning abilities including special needs learners.
This course aims to cover a range of effective studying and learning techniques grounded on cognitive and educational psychological research. This workshop makes its research foundations clear by giving an overview of the important cognitive factors behind the learning process and explains the factors and strategies that differentiates successful learners from unsuccessful ones. Besides effective academic skills, this workshop also covers the importance of student motivation, time management and organizational skills.
