about the trainer
Kelly Bourque holds a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. She is also a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) Therapist and EFT Supervisor.
Kelly leads an EFT group practice in Franklin, TN with a team of eleven. In addition to her role as owner and clinical director, she supervises therapists across the globe that are working toward their EFT certification. Kelly is seen as a leader in Tennessee as she rallies the EFT troops with resources and networking. She is still in “the trenches” as a clinician and does private 3-day intensives for couples from all over. Kelly’s 15 years of experience and passion for couples work using EFT is evident as she engages audiences through counselling, speaking, writing, and one-on-one supervision/mentoring. Kelly is the creator of a video series to help the injured partner in the couple relationship. This series, 'You’re Not Crazy. You’re Not Alone. Betrayal Trauma from a Bonding Science Perspective'. |
Course Overview
This workshop focuses on therapy work with couples. It comprises of two closely related parts. Part 1 of the workshop gives an overview of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). This is a model of therapy with mounds of evidence-based interventions embedded in bonding science. This highly effective model has caught the attention of many, earning the APA gold standard in research. This course walks the participants through the theoretical foundation, a big picture map from beginning to end with a couple, and the interventions within a typical session of a couple’s work with the therapist. The hope is that participants will come away from this training with a grasp of what EFT embodies along with some practical ways to implement the components of EFT.
Participants will learn what attachment theory is and why it’s now considered “bonding science” (it’s no longer a theory - we have proof across multiple disciplines that attachment is key for survival). Kelly will walk participants through an overview of EFT:
Participants will learn how emotion is processed in the body using CAPRA (Magda Arnold’s emotion processing theory).
For Part 2, Betrayal Trauma is the focus. Betrayal Trauma is one of the most difficult presentations. So many unknowns! How do I know it’s safe to do couples work? How recent is too recent to see a couple after a discovery? What about disclosure? How do I do that in the context of EFT? What’s a stage one attachment injury conversation? What do I do with a pursuer that keeps asking questions about the betrayal? What if I’m starting to get suspicious, too (like is the affair actually over)?
Participants will get answers to some of the above questions. The unclear will be made clear. Participants will also learn a working definition of Betrayal Trauma and understand the responses from a neuroscience/bonding science perspective. The trainer will walk participants through an overview of working through Betrayal Trauma:

The trainer will walk participants through an overview of working through Betrayal Trauma:
- Checkpoints for safety for couples work.
- Disclosure in a process way.
- Reactive pattern after discovery.
- Stage 1 (couple in current distress) conversation about the betrayal and Stage 2 (couple has de-escalated and the relationship is safe) conversation - Attachment Injury Repair.
