Course Overview

Play therapy is to children what counseling is to adults. Play therapy is an approach to counseling children in which the counsellor uses toys, art supplies, sands and other play media to communicate with clients using the ‘language’ of children – the language of play. It uses the powerful ‘therapeutic powers of play’ to help them express their feelings more easily through toys instead of words.

Play therapy is a well established discipline based upon a number of psychological theories. Research, both qualitative and quantitative shows that it is highly effective in many cases. Recent research by PTUK, an organisation affiliated to PTI, suggests that 71% of the children referred to play therapy will show a positive change.

The workshop introduces the concept of play therapy and provides a platform for participants to be acquainted with the power of play therapy through experiential learning. Participants will have hands-on experience using various elements like sand, etc, during the course of this workshop. This workshop does not qualify participants to be professional play therapists. Rather, it enriches the range of skills that they currently possess.

Elaine Chua is passionate about teaching the use of play therapy to help children. She has over 20 years of experience working with children and families, and has witnessed how play therapy has positively enhanced her work with these children. Elaine has the gift to see beyond the behavioural challenges, learning difficulties and poor self-regulation in each child.
