Course Overview

Cognitive psychology examines the study of internal mental processes—all of the things that go on inside your brain, including perception, thinking, memory, attention, language, problem solving, and LEARNING. For instance, when learning, the way our brain makes connection as we learn concepts in different ways to remember what we have learned. Students, especially in an environment that emphasises academic performance, can apply the principles of cognitive psychology to effectively utilise the limited time they have to enhance their study effectiveness.  

This 1-day workshop will give a quick overview of cognitive psychology. Two key strategies based on cognitive psychology principles will be taught: both will encompass simple techniques that teachers and educators can teach to their students studying in mainstream schools. The techniques and principles is specific to mainstream school environment and can be applied across a wide number of scenarios, across all ages and subjects.  There will also be sharing of examples how students have managed to overcome their study challenges and limitations with memory and time enhancement techniques. 

This workshop has 4 major components:

1) Part A covers an overview of the difficulties and needs of students studying in the main-stream pri and sec schools, JCs and universities. 
2) Part B, participants will get to understand how students can apply several important principles in cognitive psychology to get past mental blocks and study within specific time quantum to optimise their energy and motivation levels. 
3) Part C focuses on teaching participants about the associative learning processes distilled from the study of cognitive psychology principles.
4) Part D looks at the application of memory enhancement techniques gleaned from the understanding of associative learning processes. 

This workshop is designed especially for teachers, counsellors and AEDs that are working with students to improve their application of time management and memory enhancement techniques. Staff working in VWOs dealing with students will also find this course very helpful. Parents who are keen to support their child in their study schedule will also find this course insightful. 


​Dr Matthew Woo, a former Senior Principal Clinical Psychologist with the Institute of Mental Health, is the workshop facilitator. Dr Woo has more than 20 years of professional experience and is genuinely passionate about making a positive impact on the mental well-being of people. An articulate and engaging trainer, his sessions are always very well-received. 
Dr Woo is also an adjunct professor with the National University of Singapore and UniSIM.
